Try this: with the cursor "loaded" with the image, click and hold at the upper left corner and drag until you reach the other end of the spread. If that's not what you need comeback here.

What version of ID? Do you see more of the image if you select it with the direct select (white) arrow?
I have a jpeg image that I'm trying to place on a double page spread on indesign.
If you are trying to place it on the spread try making a frame first and placing into the frame rather than directly on the page.
So draw an empty frame:
And with it selected place your jpeg:
Then set the fitting of the frame to Fit Content Proportionately.
It may be that your 5906pixel image is set to 72ppi, which isn't unusual from digital cameras—that makes its starting output width 82 inches.
