Sometimes Extract Assets dialog is unable to render an image from a layer or a layer group. It could be due to either the name of the layer, or the type of layer it is. Some of the common reasons why we are unable to render assets are listed here (under common errors).

I got the same problem with you,but could not find a solution still now.
If you have installed blockers for Adobe activation in the past, Extract Assets dialog will not work. To check, open your /etc/hosts and ensure the content looks something like this:
Basically we need access to local IP addresses for this to work.
File Hosts looks like you said...however it's not working yet...what now ?

bug solved myself
don't know exactly what localhost-port-number is requested by Photoshop during the Extraction process
anyway... believe it or not, I simply checked "Exclude simp e hostname" (for Mac user)
at System Preferences>Ethernet>Advanced>Tab Proxies
and it works fine
