I'd spend a few hours in your nearest Barnes and Nobel. For basic stuff, spend some time with a visual quickstart guide. Although you'll be able to skip the first third, it really helps with that basic stuff.
Other than that, just spend some time on kirupa.com or these forums.

Hi danielle_01... I found the Friends of Ed book by Sham Banghal really helpful out of the 3 or 4 books I've bought on the subject. It was, by far, the easiest to digest coming from a design background.
Hey Danielle, i did some searching myself a few months ago and found a really good site with tutorials, this is were i learned everything i know.
PS: Their tutorials are for sale but they are definitely worth it
