rkelly0137 Oct 6, 2014 12:17 PM (in response to ipx)One note: you're confusing storage space with RAM. They're two different things. How much RAM do you have?

6. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
ipx Oct 6, 2014 12:50 PM (in response to ipx)I am also getting messages that certain tools don't have enough ram to work either - like the move tool and the clone tool.
I have never in photoshop history had these messages pop-up.

7. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
Pete.Green Oct 6, 2014 1:12 PM (in response to ipx)Can you provide a screenshot of the error you're getting ipx?
Are you on Mac or Win?
Do you get the same error if staring PS with the Shift key held down? (disables plug-ins)Can you paste in this forum your Photoshop Help > System Info text?
Regards,
Pete

12. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
Foster Brereton Oct 6, 2014 2:13 PM (in response to ipx)The problem may be that you are giving Photoshop too much memory. Specifically, I see:
Built-in memory: 32695 MB
Free memory: 23959 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 29602 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 100 %
My concern is that by allocating 100% of your available memory to Photoshop you starve other (potentially necessary) processes from getting the RAM they need. This could include system-level tasks that may affect what you are seeing above (transforms and clipboard manipulation). Photoshop's default usage is 70%, if memory serves (pun!)
Try backing up and then clearing your preferences.

13. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
ipx Oct 6, 2014 2:15 PM (in response to Foster Brereton)Good point - I'll try that.
thanks!

14. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
ToulouseLautrec Oct 6, 2014 2:26 PM (in response to ipx)I have the same issue. No matter where I've looked, the answer from Adobe's end is always that it's a problem with your machine, that CC is the most stable and perfect version EVER. I just reverted back to CS5, and I haven't had PS crash on me once. CC 2014 is constantly showing up as using close to 1.2 GB of RAM, while CS5, doing the same thing, uses less than 1/2 that. I've gone through all the "fixes" posted online, everything is up-to-date, and CC 2014 STILL crashes at least once every two photos. I'm waiting for a truly stable version to come out, then I'll try my luck again with the "latest and greatest".

15. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
Foster Brereton Oct 6, 2014 2:33 PM (in response to ToulouseLautrec)Your response is a bit unclear to me, and I'd like to help. Are you seeing a crash or an out-of-RAM error message? The two are very different things, and most of this thread involves the latter, not the former. Also if you could post your System Info results like ipx did it would help us further diagnose what may be happening. Thanks. -Foster

17. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
ipx Oct 6, 2014 2:48 PM (in response to ipx)I moved the amount of Ram used by photoshop down to 70% - then 50%. I am still getting out of ram messages even when saving a JPG. I am stuck in a PSD file that won't save.

18. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
Foster Brereton Oct 6, 2014 2:56 PM (in response to ipx)You say you are stuck with a PSD file that won't save. Does that mean you have not restarted the application after changing that slider? Until you restart the app the memory consumption won't change. Also, clearing your preferences is the most sure-fire way to assert nothing is sneaking in and causing havoc with your setup: How to delete/reset Photoshop preferences

19. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
ipx Oct 6, 2014 3:12 PM (in response to Foster Brereton)Yes I changed the slider and shut down photoshop then re-opened the PSD file and made changes and tried to save. Then I received the out-of-ram message again. I tried saving it as a JPG and it will not save either.

20. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
Foster Brereton Oct 6, 2014 3:26 PM (in response to ipx)That is so strange.
Can you re-send the System Info you are seeing immediately after you get the out of RAM error message, please?

24. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
ToulouseLautrec Oct 6, 2014 4:00 PM (in response to Foster Brereton)Foster,
I have been researching this problem all over the Internet. The answer is always the same: it's the user's computer, the computer has not enough RAM, send us your logs, here are a few fixes and good luck. From what I've found, especially PS has an issue of not unloading all memory once it's done w/ a particular task, but in general please explain to me why the SAME PSD file takes up 1.2 GB of RAM on PS CC 2014 and less than 500 MB on CS5? I could run this either as a 32 bit or 64 bit version, it would *still* crash. If y'all were able to actually fix this, you would already have. The only "fix" for me is a software that actually *works*. CS5.1 is completely stable. Virtually *NO* crashing at all, saves take only a few seconds and I'm never stuck on a PSD file that won't save, or an "appcrash".
I could send you all the logs I have, just like IPX has - and all the numerous other people. You would still not be able to help me. But if you truly care, make sure that the next release is actually a working model.
OK, I'm done now.
Thanks.

25. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
Chris Cox Oct 6, 2014 4:17 PM (in response to ToulouseLautrec)Photoshop reuses memory, and only allocates up to the limit you set in preferences. That is not a problem, just something that a few people don't understand.
Different cases (with similar descriptions of "out of RAM") have had very different causes (bad third party plugins, bugs in the app, bugs in third party utilities, etc.) - so each time we have to ask for information to get enough details to figure out the specific cause on each user's system.
When it is an application bug, many people run into the problem - and we fix it as soon as we can. But when the problem is in third party code, or with a preferences file or some other oddity, then only a handful of people will see a problem and we have to track down the specific cause. In some cases we can work around known issues (like bugs in certain OS versions), but other times the solution has to be fixing the external issue.

26. Re: Photoshop 2014 is always running out of ram
Foster Brereton Oct 6, 2014 4:28 PM (in response to ToulouseLautrec)Hey, I understand getting pissed when software isn't working the way it should. This goes double for software that you rely on regularly, and knowing that it's the application I develop that is giving you problems is personally unsettling.
At the same time, please consider the situation from my end. We have hundreds of thousands of users with virtually the same setup you probably have, and frankly they aren't seeing the same issues you are seeing. If you were in my shoes, given those facts, what would be your natural inclination? Would you investigate the machine exhibiting the problem, or immediately blame the software? It is entirely possible the problem is with Photoshop and not with your setup, but since your setup is the one exhibiting the symptoms, it's still the best place to start looking for clues. In either case, I hope the root problem can be identified. As you have discovered that is a nontrivial task.
I am glad to hear CS5.1 works fine for your situation, uses a smaller memory footprint, and lets you get work done. I would encourage you to keep using it until we can get to the bottom of the issue. In the meantime (and short of someone visiting your machine personally) the system info logs, crash reports, and other bits of detail we ask for about your setup are the most helpful ways in which we can work to resolve the problem. If you have any other means by which you can help us resolve things for you, I am all ears. If you are going to dictate imperatives instead of working with us and the process we have in place, your issue will remain unresolved.

ToulouseLautrec Oct 6, 2014 5:42 PM (in response to Foster Brereton)Oh, I get it. All your end users know, tho, is that THEIR app quit functioning. It was a similar scenario when Nik pushed one of their last updates and their plugin basically just quit functioning. All we could get from them was that it was Adobe's fault, and all we could from Adobe was that it was a buggy plug-in. Really not much of a solution, until they pushed another plugin and fixed things quietly in the background. Yes, I will keep using CS5.1 until CC 2014 is fixed. You cannot have THIS many complaints about it and like Chris suggest that some of us simply don't know what we're talking about. If nothing else changes but PS, all else being equal, the issue is NOT my computer. Good luck.
