      Hi Folks,

Most of them prefer export pdf instead of distiller pdf (ps to pdf) which were discussed in forum also. One of our customer preferred print pdf, but we are facing so many concerns in using print pdf. So we suggested to go for export pdf. But they reason for why we move to export pdf.

So I'm collecting pros & cons of export vs. print pdf to explain the customer which are listed below. But I need more technical points to explain them. Anyone please list out the points would be really helpful.

      Pros of Export pdf

      Print pdf

Can obtain metadata information in exported pdf from InDesign file

Cannot obtain metadata information from InDesign

Using InDesign hyperlink, can get hyperlink without broken in pdf

      InDesign hyperlink will be lost

It supports interactive elements, tagged pdf, layers, etc., used in InDesign

      Interactive elements are thrown away

No issue in creating pdf using of Mathtype equations

Problem in creating pdf using of Mathtype equation

      Cons of Export PDF

Not sure why you would want that but it could be done via a slug—a 5"x7" page trim could be expanded to 8.5"x11 by adding a 1.75' / 2" slug.

To expand on Bob and Steve's responses, the fact is that “printing” PostScript from InDesign yields PostScript optimized for printing to a live printer and not for production of PDF! Adobe strongly recommends PDF export as opposed to PDF produced by distillation of PostScript!!!!!

PDF produced by distillation of PostScript loses color management, live transparency, any and all hyperlinks. The resultant PDF may be readily searchable (for text) and may have problems in terms of fonts, especially if you try to subsequently merge such PDF files or perform any Acrobat-based touch up operations.

This is great though - when the list is complete let us know - we'll try get it posted as an FAQ.

            Thanks!
