Live update is always on in current versions. The button has been removed.
- This FAQ item, as well as this tut are fairly recent, and both suggest the button exist. So are they obsolete?
- I'm currently experiencing the same symptoms described in the above refs when "live update" is disabled (dragging timeline indicator doesn't yield display, dragging objects shows as wire frames). I vaguely remember a pop-up indicating disabling it while I was working. At the time it happened, I ignored it, so not sure. Could it be that I've disabled "live update" mode? How can I check that?
Live Update is not always on. All that has changed is that the button has been removed, since far too many beginners were turning it on by mistake. You can still toggle it with the menu item (in the Timeline panel menu) or with the keyboard modifier (Alt/Option).
Thanks, @Todd_Kopriva. Sure enough, once I've located the panel menu, I could enable live update.
