Why does Adobe Premiere Pro offer more effects for the windows platform than Mac?

    produceme1

Every time I find a cool new effect that I would like to use it seems it is only offered on the windows platform.  I am a mac user and wondering why this is.

It could be at least partially a numbers game? Apple only has, like, 10-15% marketshare in the personal computer game; if you're building apps, you'd probably want to target the largest market first, then develop for the niche platforms after the fact.

I know I'll probably get pooped on by all of the Mac nerds on these forums, but for professional use, there hasn't been a good reason to buy a Mac over a PC in, like, 4 or 5 years. We run Macs and PCs, and after our profoundly disappointing experiences with our new trashcan Mac Pro, I can say with 100% confidence that we will not be purchasing any more Macs in the future.

Thanks for your response.  I converted from PC to Mac about 10 years ago.  I was sick of all the viruses (pun intented) on PC and all my other creative friends were using Mac.  I made the switch and have been happy- not a single virus, barely any random crashes and good program support for the things I need.  Now I find myself (as well as many others I have talked to) at a cross roads.  It is time to upgrade and road is very confusing.  Final Cut abandoned its pro users so I converted to Adobe.  Now I am finding out many of their cool effects in PP aren't available in the Mac version.  AND on top of that many users like yourself have had bad or underwhelming experiences with the new mac pro.  Very confusing times.

I feel like many facilities and post-professionals I know and work with are mac-only or mac-heavy. So while apple may have only 10-15% marketshare of the personal computer game, I would say Apple is at least 50-75% marketshare of the post-production industry game.

A lot of that is inertia, though. 3 or 4 years ago, I would have laughed in your face if you'd told me that we were going to move to a PC-based workflow. Then everybody stopped using FCP, Apple refused to update their Pro towers for, like, 3 years, and released a completely redesigned MacPro that has caused us more headaches than it's worth. PPro makes it super easy to bounce projects back and forth between our Macs and PCs. Mainstream computer hardware has become powerful enough that you don't need a professional workstation to edit video and do basic motion graphics. This is totally anecdotal, I realize, but our PCs are every bit as stable (or unstable!) as our Macs, and we've yet to have a single virus on either Mac or PC (mostly because I don't let warez anywhere near our boxes...). At this point, I literally can't think of a single reason to stick with Mac as a platform; if I can put together a $2000 PC that'll perform more-or-less as well as the $3000 MacPro, why would I choose the more expensive option? I guess you could say "ProRes", but I've never really been a fan of ProRes. Besides, DNxHR will be out in a month or two; that'll be the final nail in the ol' ProRes coffin.

I honestly don't mean this to come off as an insult, but I think that in 2014, anyone who tries to tell you that Macs are somehow superior to PCs just doesn't know what they're talking about. Aside from the price, the playing field is pretty level... I hope I don't come off as being an anti-Apple, pro-PC fanboi; I'm just a big fan of rational, informed decisions.

                  Hi Producme1,

It's because Premiere Pro, for a time, was a Windows only application (between Premiere Pro 1.0 and CS3). Effects developed in that time period still exist. When the version was ported back to Mac, not every effect was re-coded based on time constraints - as it was rather a monumental task to recode the entire application. You still see the remnants of this change to this day. Rather than recode many of these effects, some of them are being deprecated from Windows.

I suggest you look into using third party plug-ins that can close some of those gaps between the Mac and Windows version. I hope that helps answer your question.

                  Thanks,
                  Kevin

Hey Derjis, I can see what you mean about after Apple came up with FCP X and the new MacPro that their grip on the post-production industry has been slipping. I for one didn't mean to sound opinionated about the mac vs. PC argument (I actually don't really care all that much to be honest, haha) and I don't doubt that the industry will move in that direction if apple keeps ignoring the needs of the industry, I simply meant to say they still do have a heavy market share within the industry, and that will probably remain because, as you said, inertia, and comfort, at least for a time.

                      That's just...wrong.
