I work on a lot of InDesign documents that need to have the date the document was last updated on the last page. I'm wondering if there's a way to do this automatically because I often forget to update the date each time I make an edit and export a PDF of the latest version.
Good news - that's actually a built in function in InDesign.
It's a text variable official version of how to do it is here: (InDesign Help | Text variables)
You'll want to put a text box on that page where you want the date, make sure your text tool is in that text box and and then go to Type > Text Variables > Insert Variable > Modification Date
From then on out, once you save the document, that date will update. So you'll have to remember to save BEFORE you make the PDF, but you won't actually have to remember to update the date.
Great, thank you! I'm one of those people who compulsively saves every 20 seconds or so, so remembering to save shouldn't be a problem
