Why do I need to be signed into my Adobe ID to use Elements Editor?

    Angryuk Community Member

Everytime I use Elements Editor I am automatically logged onto Adobe.   Why is this when I always thought Elemens was a Stand Alone piece of software?

It's a poor language choice on adobe's part. In PSE 12 and 13, signing in = activate. When you sign out you deactivate the program. You don't need to be online, but you do need to stay signed in to use these versions of PSE.

Thank you for your reply Barbara.   Poor language choice or not ..... I DO have to be signed in to be able to use Elements, if I'm nor signed in it simple will not open.   I have to say what I think is poor is the support we are all getting from Adobe.  I have mailed the CEO for the second time today because I've had this software for 3 weeks and as yet it has not run smoothly.   I'm saddened with PSE 13 after having been a keen user since PSE 5.

Yes, you do need to be signed in. As I said in my previous post when you sign out that means you deactivate it. But PSE will work even if you prevent it from connecting to the internet (except for some of the content in places like the graphics panel that needs to be downloaded on first use).

It would be better to start a new thread explaining exactly what problems you are having with PSE.

Hi Babara.  I've now given up with Adobe support...... Yesterday afternoon they could give me no valid reason why I had to be "logged on" to my Adobe ID to use the software, if i was paranoid I may think that this is a "big brother" feature !?!.   Being "logged on" apparently is, so I'm told, a security feature.... but why is there no such feature on Organizer where all my personal photos are stored?   Why is it on the portion of PSE where nothing is stored, it is only used in a transient manner?   If someone hacks my PC I want my personal stuff protected, I wouldn't really care if they used my Editor as there is nothing personal in that part of the application.   Being "logged on" also means to me that I would be connected to an Adobe server somewhere .... if that is not the case then why is this required?   Seems like the developers have added a useless step in the program.  You need to "Sign out" to use the package on a 3rd PC/Device now if that device is a mobile devise you will need to carry your s/n around with you .... how secure is that?  When I use my cash point I put in my pin number and the bank knows who I am and which account to access, it doesn't then ask me for my account number ..... when I show my passport at customs they do not then ask for my birth certificate.   So why when I log on using my Adobe ID, after logging out, will I need to then add the s/n?   Do Adobe not store this info against my ID?  It seems to me, from reading through the forums, that Adobe need to get their act together.   I give up ..... and will probably start looking for another photo application, it may not be industry leader but I think they may care what their customers want, ask for and give better support.

From version 12, you can install PSE on as many computers as you like. The serial number is only required to do the initial installation.

To use the product you have to sign in, and you can have any two machines signed in at once. Once signed in that machine remains activated even if not connected to the Internet. You can prove this for yourself by turning off your router and restarting your machine. Even without Internet access you will still be able to use PSE on that machine.

So basically don't sign out if you want to keep using the product on a particular machine. As Barbara said in an earlier reply 'sign in' is a poor choice of phrase for this security function. They should have kept it as 'Activate / Deactivate' instead of 'Sign in / Sign Out'.

                    Cheers,

The serial number is required if you sign out ..... when you sign in again you are asked for the s/n...... so if you want to use it on another device, lets say a tablet, you will need to carry your s/n handy to do this.........when surely simply using your Adobe ID should surffice?  As I've said before when I use my cash point card and put in my PIN I don't expect to be asked for my account number as well !!!    If you can work "offline" then what is the point of signing in to your account?   Why if this is a stand alone product do you need to activate it after the initial installation?    When I'm connected to the internet I want to be sure that I'm only connected to a site that I to access and not to Adobe or any other site. If Adobe are not using this feature to collect data from my PC then they should allow us to use the software we have paid for without the need for being "signed in" and allow us to connect to Adobe as we wish and not as they want.  Please don't try and tell me that Adobe are not collecting info from me in this way !!!!    I recently spoke to a help desk Manager, at least thats what I was told he was, named Sundeep, who assured me he would try and find out if there was anyway to work around the need to be signed in.  But as yet I've had no further contact from him...... situation normal for Adobe help.  So we have to resort to forums and badly trained chat line operatives.   The only 1 good operative I spoke too seemed to try a gloss over the question I asked about this issue.   I really hope I don't find that Adobe are accessing info from my PC without my permission, buy there software does not give them this, because I'm sure there must be some legislation on this.

                          Paul,

Apologies for the issues you have been facing in using the product. We really value your relationship and appreciate your feedback. We would like to give you some context of building the sign-in functionality during install and thereafter.

We have built in Sign-in option to control the piracy related to offline activations. Currently we allow one serial key to be activated on two machines and to ensure serial key is not being misused, we need the user to sign in with the adobe id once on a machine.

In most cases, users sign in while installing the product and in such cases, they don't see the sign prompt thereafter. However if the user was offline during installation process, user would be prompted to sign in at every launch for the first 7 days. Thereafter, user won't be permitted to use the product unless signed in.

Hope that explains the behavior to some extent.

                          Regards,

                          vaishali
