I copied all my photos to an external disk using the operating system. I kept the same folder structure and name, just moved it to the new location. In Lightroom I selected the folder, which now had a question mark on it, and selected update folder location, and navigated to the new location. The folder and all subfolders show up fine and there are no longer any question marks. However, above the Folders tab, under the Catalog tab it says: Missing Photographs 523. The photos that show when this is selected are in the folders that were updated and they show up there as well with no question marks. Why is Lightroom still listing them as missing?
Okay, I'm going to answer my own issue in case anyone else comes across it since I just realized what I did. I had inadvertently made a temporary collection out of the missing photos. That temporary collection was what I was seeing under the catalog tab. So, I just removed it and all is good. Newbie user error.
