1. Re: When I click "File" and then "New" it keeps opening a new file as a layer and not a background. RGB is selected as the mode.
gener7 Oct 18, 2014 2:13 PM (in response to bunneey)When photoshop acts unpredictable and you haven't adjusted the settings, resetting preferences usually resolves this.
Hold down the ctrl-alt--shift key on Windows and start photoshop. You should see the reset dialog. Just agree to it and file > new should work normally.

bunneey Oct 18, 2014 2:17 PM (in response to gener7)I tried that. the only thing that happened was a box popped up that said do you want to allow PS to make changes to your computer. I clicked yes and that was all. PS just opened and it was still broken.

gener7 Oct 18, 2014 2:23 PM (in response to bunneey)I'm not at my desk, but another idea is to open the New File dialog and hold down the Alt key. You should see a Reset button. Try that.

gener7 Oct 18, 2014 4:22 PM (in response to bunneey)Thanks for the screenshot. Change Transparent to White and you should now have a Background layer.

bunneey Oct 18, 2014 4:28 PM (in response to gener7)Ok, so i usually only make png files. so the background has to be transparent. but even when i change it to white, it does change it to background vs layer. However, it still doesnt create a new layer when i make a new layer. So in the image below i created several different shapes. They should have all posted as individual layers but instead they are just posting as part of the background. So no matter what i do it just shows every layer as either 1 layer or 1 background. Any ideas?

gener7 Oct 18, 2014 4:54 PM (in response to bunneey)Yes. You are using the Ellipse Tool's Pixel option. So it is laying down pixels as it is supposed to do without creating a layer.
Choose the Shape option:
Also Layer menu > New Layer creates layers and the curled paper at the bottom of your Layers palette also creates a New Layer. I hope those work.

gener7 Oct 18, 2014 7:48 PM (in response to gener7)I'd like to add that your screenshots were the best help. I had no idea until you did and I just was giving out stock answers.
I encourage you to do this for future questions.
