1. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
BikerJared Oct 24, 2014 2:45 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)I'm seeing what sounds like same thing. I got my iPad Air 2 this morning and my Ink & Slide earlier this week.
I've done some research and here are my findings so far:
- My friends iPad Air with iOS 7 works fine
- The limited functionality that this has on my iPad 3rd Gen works fine
- I've shut off Multi-touch gestures and palm rejection and still have the same behavior
- I've charged Ink completely with no improvement
- Using my finger doesn't exhibit the problem
- I've seen problems with Line, Sketch and Penultimate. Line and Penultimate work fine on older iPads with Ink.

Stephen Barrante Oct 24, 2014 3:17 PM (in response to BikerJared)- My friends iPad Air with iOS 7 works fine
- Yea, I'm running 8.1 on an Air 2. So I don't have any experience with that.
- The limited functionality that this has on my iPad 3rd Gen works fine
- I've shut off Multi-touch gestures and palm rejection and still have the same behavior
- Tried that as well. No difference.
- I've charged Ink completely with no improvement
- Using my finger doesn't exhibit the problem
- I've seen problems with Line, Sketch and Penultimate. Line and Penultimate work fine on older iPads with Ink.
Thanks for chiming in – I imagine we are not alone.

BikerJared Oct 24, 2014 3:21 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)I've created a video demonstrating the problem. Let me know if this is what you're seeing:

4. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Stephen Barrante Oct 24, 2014 3:31 PM (in response to BikerJared)Yup! That's exactly it.
In some cases, but it may be contributed to a different issue, it stutters or the focal point jumps. This might be when I've tried to rest my hand on the screen. The "palm rejection" isn't quite ready for primetime yet. But when I then lift my hand up and sketch again, I run into the issue we are both describing.
Where we net out is an unpleasant drawing experience.

5. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
robbwacso Oct 29, 2014 11:32 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)there does seem to be a problem related to the iPad air 2...the iPad air 1 works great, (i have both)...i'm assuming adobe knows about this?...it sounds like adonit (the makers of the ink pen) is aware of the issue, but the issue isn't with the pen itself (this happens with any pen and even your finger) it's the new screen on the iPad air 2. hopefully there is a fix for this. i would love if adobe would comment on this issue.
-
6. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
BikerJared Oct 29, 2014 1:00 PM (in response to robbwacso)I contacted Adonit's support and they're aware. They're working on a fix. Supposedly, someone named Chase commented somewhere on the forum about it. As far as Adobe, goes, I'm not sure if people in their support org are aware of this problem or not. I honestly expected this thread to explode after the iPad Air 2 launch, but it hasn't. I'm guessing there aren't tons of people with Ink + an Air 2.
FWIW, I have a Jot Classic that I've been using and its far my reliable than the Ink pen. My finger, although there are problems, is also a lot more reliable than the pen.

7. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Stephen Barrante Oct 29, 2014 1:07 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)If it's a hardware issue, Adobe is going to have a bit of a mess on their hands. I picked this up at the Adobe Max conference and they couldn't keep the pens on the shelves they were selling out so fast. That would be a lot of units to have to warranty.
I may put in a call into Adobe myself to get on the radar – and see where we net out. It's really a bummer, I had hoped to start using it on some upcoming projects, sketching out ideas, etc... and it's as annoying as using a dried up sharpie.

Florian Valence Oct 30, 2014 4:36 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Hello,
I experience the same problem.
The Adonit team seems to be aware of it and workingon it : Problem with jot touch Pixelpoint and iPad air 2

9. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Stephen Barrante Nov 4, 2014 9:33 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Thanks for that link. Would be great if @Adobe could chime in and let us know if they are also aware of the issue and if updates to the drawing applications are in the works.

10. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Soehngenetic Nov 6, 2014 2:16 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Hi,
same problem over here: iPad Air 2 64gb WiFi with Ink & Slide. "Upgraded" my old iPad 1 just for the one reason to be able to use Ink & Slide and the new mobile apps.
I hope this gets sorted out really soon and also would appreciate a statement from Adobe!

11. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Andiroo42 Nov 7, 2014 9:14 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)It looks like all stylI are having this issue with dropped lines and slow gestures being wavy because of the iPad Air 2's new screen manufacturing process. All styli manufacturers will need to fix their SDK's. Adonit apparently fixed the JotTouch issues (maybe same code for Ink) just today by the looks of their GitHub log. I hope Adobe will commit the changes soon, but they just released an update for draw and line without the corrections.

12. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Stephen Barrante Nov 9, 2014 8:23 AM (in response to Andiroo42)Are these going to just be updates on the app side, or, will there be a firmware update for the pen as well?
-
13. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Andiroo42 Nov 9, 2014 5:42 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Not sure about that one Stephen, I'm not that familiar with the tech. I've pieced this info together from what I could find from various sources. It seems its just an iPad issue.

14. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Soehngenetic Nov 20, 2014 3:22 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Just did a search about this issue again and the following came up:
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1616973
Looks like Adobe is officially aware of the issues and we can hope for getting those solved sooner or later.

15. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Lukas_A Dec 7, 2014 7:56 AM (in response to Soehngenetic)Any update on this issue yet? I think there should be some kind of response / software update by now?

16. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Stephen Barrante Dec 7, 2014 12:38 PM (in response to Lukas_A)I have my apps set to automatically update from AppStore. And as of a couple days ago it was still flaking out. This is unfortunate, since I'm showing this off to the design department faculty (illustration professors in particular) tomorrow, and will have to downplay that issue, which hopefully will be resolved soon!
Adobe, can you advise?

17. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Lukas_A Dec 9, 2014 10:32 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)There seems to be a problem with the new iPad Air 2 screen. Apparently it is more power hungry than before which has led Apple to use a heavier power saving mode on the screen. This makes it miss / drop the stylus connection. To me this looks like a tough proble to solve. I am surprised Adobe has not given an update on this situation...
-
18. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Lukas_A Dec 13, 2014 1:59 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Apple writes:
"The LCD layer is now closer to your eyes (and your fingers), so when you touch the screen it feels as if you’re touching your content. And we’ve improved the sensitivity of the screen, so it tracks your finger even more accurately, especially when you make quick gestures. Which means everything you do — playing games, surfing the web, enjoying photos and videos — becomes more personal, immediate, and immersive."
I guess once the problems are fixed the Ink should actually work better on the iPad Air 2 compared to the iPad Air 1? Anyone who can test how they compare between the two models?

19. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
george kaplin Dec 18, 2014 6:39 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)In the LINE forum they acknowledged the issue officially but didn't give a timeline on a fix. "Procreate" just updated its app yesterday and says the issue is fixed. I dont have a INK/SLIDE to test since I have a Air2. I held off on the purchase.

20. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
robertvandewiel Dec 24, 2014 12:26 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)any news from Adobe? Just bought myself a new Air2 and Ink/Slide ... should have read this before as my stylus is sort of useless now (if i keep drawing like this i will end up smashing the thing through my ipad i'm afraid....)

21. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
rileyct Dec 24, 2014 7:27 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)i gave a response here -- i would guess we'll see a few more of these after the holiday. hopefully there's a response/fix soon.
Ink stops working mid stroke on iPad Air 2; Works fine on iPad Air

23. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Stephen Barrante Jan 8, 2015 3:05 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Has anyone confirmed if the Adonit pens are working fine now? I'm seriously considering throwing my Ink + Slide on eBay.

24. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Lukas_A Jan 8, 2015 3:31 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Adonit just updated their blog with a clarification of the problems encountered. My guess is that Adobe is waiting to update the apps until the next version of the SDK is ready. But still that is just my guess...
-
25. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
rileyct Jan 8, 2015 3:49 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)just an update, for anyone following this.
i decided to return my ink/slide and ipad air 2 for a surface pro 3. i paid quite a bit more... but adobe's done a lot of work -- in just a short amount of time -- adding some nice touch features to AI. it's pretty basic, but i'm excited to see what they put out next!
there are occasional issues with input not registering, but it's much less of an issue here. also, lag is greatly reduced, and there's no wonky parallax effect when using the pen at different angles.
overall, much better than struggling with the ink/air combo (aside from the fact that it's a clunky surface pro 3, and not a puuurrrtty ipad air). plus, since it's a real pc, it fits into my existing workflow, without any tweaking.

26. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
george kaplin Jan 8, 2015 4:15 PM (in response to rileyct)I did the same thing in reverse and am now regretting it. Returning my SP3 for Ipad Air2. I don't use my INK/SLIDE at all anymore.
Drawing on the SP3 was a dream. Although there are far fewer windows apps. Wacom bamboo paper works on Win and was a great app comparable to LINE and 53 Paper.
In the end the SP3 wasn't a great tablet. But the bigger screen and better stylus was great for sketching.

27. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
Ilian Dinev Jan 12, 2015 5:19 AM (in response to george kaplin)Yep, I am also returning Ink&Slide. To be honest I am a bit disappointed from Adobe. They have a really great presentations about this product but it seems they were all fake or outdated. I wish I had seen this thread before buying Ink&Slide. To be honest this product is definitely not for selling only for showing off.

28. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
idollobi Feb 19, 2015 9:36 PM (in response to Stephen Barrante)I Was wondering if there's any update on this?
Guilt Admition: I (Not knowingly) (and quiet stupidly) without reading the forum aquired an Air2 and Ink&Slide just yesterday, specifically to use them Adobe Apps. And you know the rest, things explained above happened. I admit the issues do not render the trio useless, but compared to my Air and Bamboo, I am not merely satisfied with the result.
well is there a light?

29. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
robertvandewiel Feb 19, 2015 11:22 PM (in response to idollobi)(small) light: Goodnotes App now supports Adonits latest SDK, improving performance of their #JotScript stylus (and thus Ink) on the iPad Air 2. I've tried this and performance really improved in Goodnotes, i hope Adobe also will push updates on their apps soon.... (with other words; it can be done...)

30. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
medembinski Mar 26, 2015 6:40 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)I wish there would be some e-mail notification when the problem is fixed. I find myself checking apps and the internet every day, which is rather a mundane process of being informed.
I will check Goodnotes, thanks robertandewiel

31. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
lbjessen Mar 29, 2015 3:25 AM (in response to medembinski)God Idea !
I have the same rutine here - every day.
I'm looking for updates from Adonit in iPhone / iPad apps, if they are first.
Sum days ago they put out a update for there app (Forge) with similar problems, (Hopes were high!) but it didn't solve the problem with Ink!
Stille the same problem there. -
32. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
lbjessen Mar 31, 2015 1:32 AM (in response to lbjessen)And now - If I didn't know better... And I doubt I do...
Adobe just released a new version of Draw for iPad / iPhone, and in the comments stating that you can "Draw precise" with pens from 2 other companies. Wacom and FiftyThree....Is Adobe laying this case on iPad Air2 and Ink to rest for good ?
We who keep an iPad Air2 because its super for manny other things - We lack periodic info from Adobe, if the project of getting it to work is still going on.....
Adobe - that communication is not good enough. You could do better.

33. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
medembinski Mar 31, 2015 1:56 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Thanks for update Ibjessen, I should start following you rather than Adobe for Ink&slide updates
Indeed, something awfully mysterious is going on with Ink & Slide fix, and with Adobe being good samaritans and helping other companies before fixing their own stuff. Touching.
The saga continues.

34. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
robertvandewiel Apr 8, 2015 2:33 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)The saga continues, as posted here: Re: Ink stops working mid stroke on iPad Air 2; Works fine on iPad Air (spoiler: no solution for now)

35. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
lbjessen Apr 11, 2015 4:33 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Hopes where here again, as Apple came up with an iPad iOS update today.
Did they find sum hiccups, that could help ??? NO.Status Quo.....

36. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
curtish33330793 May 8, 2015 8:41 AM (in response to Stephen Barrante)Any updates? I see they removed the iPad Air 2 from the list of compatible iPads. Unfortunately we already have purchased the iPad Air 2 and Ink and Slide upon their recommendations. Customer service recommends we wait it out till the update, but should we just return our iPad for one that works with Ink and Slide?

39. Re: Ink pen works inconsistently
robertvandewiel May 8, 2015 9:28 AM (in response to curtish33330793)Well. At the moment. No. (I'm beeing looped with an Adobe expert on this topic for over a month now...)
