I'm trying to find a way where I can link to several documents into one master document. I know how to place linked Word/Excel files into InDesign, but is there a way I could build a document using Data Merge? I'm imagining I'd link to each document in my CSV, possibly with a @ column header. Has anyone tried this before with any success?
I'm having difficulty understanding exactly what it is that you would like to try and do.
Concerning Data Merge, the answer is no. When presented with a header field that has an "@" preceding the field name, InDesign's data merge feature will import images that are the likes of .jpg .tif .eps .png .gif .pdf .ai; but won't import content such as .rtf .doc .docx or .txt. It is worth noting that Adobe's help (InDesign Help | Data merge) does not list what types of images will import as part of a data merge. Another additional note - if importing pdf or ai file that is many pages long as part of the data merge, the merge will only take the first page of the PDF/AI, and there isn't a way to make the merge import a different page.
If you would like to import a lot of word files into an InDesign file all at once into the same text frame, I wrote a piece about this on InDesignSecrets: http://indesignsecrets.com/place-word-files-one-frame.php
Okay, thanks. I figured that was the case, but if there was a way to pull it off, someone here would know. I appreciate it!
