The "Can't Handle Request..." dialog comes up when InDesign is already open, and in an open file, there is a dialog box open.
I haven't seen the "No Document Opened" dialog.
First, I'd try restarting your computer, and see if it happens again.
Second, if it's still happening, try restoring your preferences as described here:

I've restarted numerous times with no change, so I know that's not a fix.
I will look over the link you've provided and try it out as soon as I can. I'll let you know if it works.
I followed the instructions to manually replace the two files (as detailed in the link above) with no luck. I'm still getting the same scenario I posted above. If this helps: This issue started after I switched from the InDesign free trial to the paid subscription. (Although I do remember completing several updates immediately after I sent my payment information, so possibly it had to do with the updates.)
I have yet to try the Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift sequence, but wanted to check in first to see if you had any other thoughts. Thanks for your time!
If you continue to have problems, I'd uninstall ID and reinstall.
