Tell us the EXACT error message.
"Following files were not imported because they cannot be read", listed in groups of 100. Mixture of RAW and JPEG or just JPEGs.
The destination folder that Lightroom is trying to copy the file to on your hard drive does not have WRITE permission. Change your permissions.
Does this look correct for a directory structure created by LR? 2014 is the root folder I am working in.

Since I'm not a Mac person, I can't tell you if it looks correct.
Does it indicate you have WRITE permission to that folder?
You also need to first check the Destination panel in the Import dialog box in Lightroom, and ascertain what folder is set as the destination (it may not be the folder you think it is) and then check the permissions on that folder (not the folder you think you are importing to). Sometimes the folder gets changed accidentally, which may be why this has just started recently.
I do. The first section wxr indicates the owner (rogerbenson) has read, write, execute. The second is the group, which has read and execute. And finally the last is everyone, which has read and execute. This one shows that the owner has read/write/execute, which is the same as being having administrator privilege, so I do. Permissions filter down just like in Windows, so the farther to the left you are, the more you have over everything underneath.
Just ran a permissions repair and will see if that fixes it, but I'm not seeing a change on that folder. Running command line permission commands (chmod and chown) to take ownership are running into a bunch of errors around the other directories and files in that folder structure so I may be looking at a general corruption.
Thanks for the pointer.
BTW, if you know Linux, you know Mac.
Perhaps this is just your wording not communicating to me the meaning I am looking for, but it seems you totally ignored my last paragraph.
I did and it is writing or attempting to write to the same folder (/Users/rogerbenson/Pictures/2014). I verified that first thing by having Lightroom create a folder in the same path I am attempting to import into, moving things around inside the folder within Lightroom, and then verifying outside of LR that the folder and files are there. Just for giggles I created a folder outside of LR, synchronized, and made sure it was there. All of them have the same permissions.
Is there a way to see what permissions LR is trying to use?
