Do you know this for sure, or you're assuming it because that's what fixed your problem? I'm not saying it's not true, just unlikely, I can't see the need to send data to Adobe' server each time you start a RAM preview, not to mention they would need a huge amount of space to receive all this data worldwide.

That is completely false.
Regarding the relevance of the firewall settings:
Several components of After Effects communicate with one another over TCP connections within the computer. Overly aggressive security software can block even these internal TCP communication channels. So, the solution to many such problems is to tell the security software to not do that.
