There are 3rd party database Xtras which use proprietary database formats which make the displaying of data very simple. But again that is all proprietary.
If you want to query a MySQL database for example, you can simply have Director send a request to a PHP page which in turn performs the query with the database and returns data.

There are many such xtras. Which one is appropriate depends on which DB
engine you wish to interface with and/or whether it needs to be

The only free one I'm aware of is Valentin's sqlite xtra

Some database xtras support member binding, but you might expect to
write some code to display returned results in named #text members
