Text boxes went white! Formatting issue or glitch?

We've been using InDesign on the same computer for years now, and today (while laying out a print publication) the text boxes went white. The text wasn't deleted, just inaccessible and invisible. The only way the text could become visible was by messing with the formatting — changing column numbers, increasing border spacing, etc. — and even then it wouldn't work completely. Is this a formatting issue or a bug in the program? We already did basic troubleshooting (restarting the computer, changing files, etc.) I would love to know why this happened, so we could prevent any incident in the future.
