Why do my catalogs keep becoming corrupt?

    photomaniacmichele

I'm desperate. I've been having trouble with Lightroom catalog corruption since the beginning of October.

When efforts to get help fixing my original Lightroom catalog came to nothing, I decided to start all over again with a  brand new catalog about a week ago.  It only has my photos in it (no digital scrapbook supplies like my original catalog did), a couple of import presets, and two smart collections now, and today it gave me its second failed integrity test already!  It has crashed a few times too, while I was importing my ~100,000 photos over a few days this week.

I'm using an iMac with 12GB RAM.  I've done many things to address the corruption problem over the last six weeks including run diagnostics on my internal and external hard drive, which said they're fine. My catalog is on my internal and my photos and backups are on my external, which is a Western Digital.

Using Lightroom is going okay (I did have an issue soon after I started my new catalog with it not wanting to import videos, but purging the cache fixed that). I have imported photos and processed them.  But it worries me that already my new catalog that's less than a week old is having trouble backing up, just like my old one did.  It tries to back up, then gives me this error message:

      i-MSQsVNr-M.png

With my original catalog, after a few times the repair failed even. Lightroom was able to fix my new catalog the first time it failed this check; I haven't tried yet to re-open it after I got the integrity failure again just now. I came here to desperately ask for help.

      Why is this happening?

What should I be doing differently?

Do I have to start all over with another new catalog yet again?

      Thank you

I don't know why it's happening, but certainly your hardware is suspect, e.g. ram and disk.

At a minimum, check disk and ram, and try moving catalog to a different device.

Sorry for taking so long to write again but this forum is extremely difficult to figure out how to use. It took me way too long to find where messages disappear after we've posted them.  Why can't we subscribe to threads so we're notified when there's a response.

Anyway, I'm still have lots of crashes.  Sometimes it's just a program crashing; sometimes the whole computer shuts down and restarts.

Let me list what I have done over the last couple of weeks.

Run Memtest and Disk Utility tests. They showed all is fine.

Communicated with Apple tech support via phone. I gave them access to my computer and everything was fine except when we did "Verify Disk" on my internal drive it found a problem, which led me to the next thing . . .

Brought my iMac into the Apple Store, where they ran the same tests plus another test and all came out fine. She was surprised to see I have "unbalanced" memory cards. I have two 2 GB and two 4 GB cards. She suggested trying to remove two of them and see how things go. We will be trying this tomorrow.

Paused my Backblaze backup to see if it was interfering. I still had crashes during those two days.

Changed my LR workflow so I was importing to my internal drive instead of EHD, and unplugged the EHD.  Still had crashes.

On Dec. 7 I began taking notes about the crashes:

12/7  PSE crashed while trying to save a file, several times until I gave up. Restarted next morning and it functioned fine.

12/8  WHOLE computer crash while I was typing about my computer problems at lightroomforums.net -- LR, Mail, Safari with several tabs including a CreativeLIVE episode streaming were open, and PSE were all open (though PSE was hanging; thought I'd closed it). Computer restarted automatically.  Note: This is the day I paused Backblaze, disconnected my internal drive, and began importing to my internal drive instead of EHD.

Hours later -- trying to open Skype, it just kept crashing immediately

12/9 LR stalled while creating 1:1 previews when I imported some photos. I left for a while and when I came back and clicked in LR (after logging into my desktop) the computer crashed and rebooted.

12/11  My daughter was using my computer on HER desktop, reading a website with Safari, and the whole computer crashed and rebooted.

12/13 I'd done several things in LR, including uploading to Smugmug and moving folders, and I closed LR, clicking OK to back-up. Within a minute I got the "sorry...failed integrity test" error message (like in the screenshot in my first post above). Fortunately, upon restarting it immediately, LR was able to repair the catalog, and right away I made another (apparently successful) back up attempt, though it took over 3 minutes.

Much later today: I was importing pictures to LR. It seemed to go quickly until the 1:1 building. The progress bar didn't move for 10 minutes, during which time I used Mail and Safari, and when I returned to LR and clicked, the WHOLE computer crashed. After it rebooted and I got back into LR I changed to Standard previews, and that still took a long time, never getting past ¼ done, and the computer crashed AGAIN.

I've copied my last two crash reports. Will that help?  I'll put them in two more posts to keep this from getting obnoxiously long.

            Please help!

Computer crashes are almost always hardware problems or drivers that are not up-to-date.

One likely suspect is the fans in your computer case, if they are not working properly, then your CPU (or other component) will overheat, and the computer crashes.

I had a similar problem years ago on a PC.  It took ages to solve and included the RAM manufacturer replacing all of the RAM modules.  It still crashed.  The problem was finally solved when one or two BIOS settings were adjusted at the suggestion of the RAM manufacturer.  I had initially suspected the hard drive, and that ended up having nothing to do with it.  I have no idea if this is your issue, but I'd certainly start with Apple's suggestion of using only matched pairs of RAM.  In your case, use one pair and see how it goes.  Perhaps Apple can tell you how to reset all BIOS settings to their defaults.

dj's suggestion about the fan is good.  My son's laptop had random crashes and a bad fan was the culprit.

Thank you. Fan is not something anyone has thought of yet. Taking note . . .

Thank you John. We're about to remove one of the pairs now.

I actually just used LR for some importing and organizing and backing up to Smugmug for about an hour, and all went well including backing up (though it was slow). The only thing different compared to recent crashes is that I changed the Preview-building setting on import from 1:1 to Minimal.  Although it used to be on minimal before I learned more about that preference a few weeks ago, and this computer has always had crashes, so it might not have anything to do with anything.

That's the worst part -- the inconsistency of the problem makes it frustratingly hard to solve.
