slim space at start of line

    gcruls

I use Illustrator to produce a newsletter, as it has some DTP features.

Something that happens in almost every publication is that not one or three or more lines start after a slim space, but two. Always two.

      What the heck is that?

I have tried deleting the whole story and recreating the text boxes, but to no avail.

I have displayed hidden characters, but nothing shows up.

      Any insights?

      Many thanks

My thought is: use InDesign. Illustrator is not built around typography, that's not what it's for, even if you can force it into making text-led designs. (Heck, I've heard of people designing forms in Photoshop and writing letters in Excel, but that doesn't make it an ideal choice).  Continue, of course, to use Illustrator for the things it is good for, and place your designs into InDesign pages.

I would have totally agree with TSN.

But if you are insisting on using illy and you are having spacing issues it may be caused by your paragraph styles and that is assuming you are using them? Check your space before and after settings and play with them until you get them correct? If you are not using them then you should be and that should sort out any issues you have as you can set specific spacing and also clear any overrides you may picked up from say copy and pasting from random sources, etc.

Take a look at this (Illustrator Help | Character and paragraph styles) and look up these techniques and source some on-line tutorials to help you.

Using the correct software will be your best bet but like I have said if you want to or have to use illy then look into how to use it correctly.
