john beardsworth Dec 2, 2014 10:54 AM (in response to erudolph)Use the targeted adjustment tool - the little nipple in the top left corner of the panel. Stroke up and down on areas of the image you want to lighten and darken. It's also available in the HSL/B&W panel and is more interactive than Curves tools in most other apps (it's in Photoshop), and it allows you to keep your eyes entirely on the picture's changing appearance instead of having to switch between the image and a panel or sliders.

erudolph Dec 2, 2014 10:59 AM (in response to john beardsworth)Thanks Jim and John. It helps a little. Still not great interactivity. And if you want to modify an existing curve with points you often add points that are too close to the ones already there. Perhaps this is just the way it is with large RAW files?

john beardsworth Dec 2, 2014 1:10 PM (in response to erudolph)The curve is very much a secondary tool in Lightroom. Try to get as close as you can using the Basic panel, and then try using the curve. The TAT means you don't bother so much about points as in other programs - all your attention should be on the image's changing appearance as you draw on it with the TAT.

erudolph Dec 2, 2014 1:15 PM (in response to john beardsworth)Hi John... for me, the trouble with the targeted adjustment tool is that once you use it, you actually have set a point, and to alter that you need to use the curves. I sometimes use VSCO presets; I disagree with them on some of the color balances they use and they largely use R, G and B curves which I'd like to tweak.

RikkFlohr Dec 2, 2014 1:46 PM (in response to erudolph)Remember too that [Alt/Opt] while dragging constrains the movement of the curve to 10% of normal. It is very helpful when using a Pen/Tablet/

8. Re: Adjusting curve points is difficult, not at all interactive
PIRose Dec 2, 2014 7:33 PM (in response to erudolph)I used to have the same problem of unintentionally adding curve points when I would try placing the cursor directly on the point.
Eventually I realized it's possible to adjust existing points without needing to place the cursor directly on them (or even near the curve).
To do this, I guide my cursor so that it lines up directly beneath--or above--any existing point (keeping some separation), and when the cursor changes shape and the point is highlighted, I can click and hold the mouse button to drag the point to any desired position. Of course, fine(r) control is possible using the [Alt/Opt] key as Rick mentioned (and which I had forgotten!).
