    What is Flex? (k)

    Level 7
Please don't send me to the Adobe site. I've been through the
explanation there and still don't get it.

Is flex a means to pull data from a mySQL database into Flash? Is it
      something completely different?

Does a web server need to be configured to us Flex?

We are web designers here who use Dreamweaver and Flash daily, but
rarely venture in to the database dynamically driven website world. We
      farm that stuff out.

One of my employees wants to take a class in Flex. I just want to be
sure we get some sort of return on that investment.

          My 2 cent description.

Flex is a way to programmatically create Flash applications using the
          new MXML language.

It has many objects to allow the retrieval of data for use in the
          created Flash application.

No the server does not necessarily need to be set up to do this,
depending on which options are chosen and what functionality is desired.
But the more advanced features such as data pushing from the server to
the clients will involve coordination with the server.

Further, Flex itself does not communicate with databases or server file systems. Some middle tier is required for data driven apps. Flex communicates with the outside worls using SOAP-based WebService, XML over HTTP HTTPService, and proprietary AMF to Java using RemoteObject.

Flex apps do not use the "timeline". I don't even know what that is.

Flex 1.5 requires a server for many thousands of dollars. Flex 2 does not need to cost anything. Flex Builder, an IDE, and Flex Data Services are available for purchase.

By the way, this is a Flex 1.5 forum. Much more action is to be found on the Flex 2 General Discussion forum.

Which is located where? I have reset my NNTP list for this server multiple
times and it doesn't show up. Is it on another server?

              Thanks,

I don't use nntp, so I cant help you there. Go through the Adobe support website, maybe you will be able to tell how to find that forum.

I found it .. it's the one that was set up on labs .. they just didn't
change the name, but it's the same group.

                  Thanks, Tracy!
