What exact version of AE? 13.1.1?
What are the specs of your machine?
What are your audio hardware and audio output preferences?
What are the technical specs of your WAV file? 48khz? 16-bit? Etc.
iMac(27" Mid 2011)
3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Using internal audio outputting through the headphone jack
Wave files are 96 KHz / 24 bit
The problem is not consistent. And there was a new development: It also played slowed down at a lower pitch during one amusing preview.
Maybe this is an OS X error when other sound programs are used and then quit, and the machine had to play different types of audio specs. I also use Soundtrack Pro for quick audio editing and Pro Tools for heavy sound design. But both of those programs playback audio correctly 100% of the time.
At this time, I had quit every program and left the computer for the night (but not a restart) and now it appears to be previewing correctly. But the odd thing is that this was happening on my laptop (same specs for the OS and software) in front of a client the other week (hitting the full RAM preview resulted in accurate video, but fast, pitched up audio that ended before the video since it was pitched up)
This problem does not extend to renders. Only previewing.
Try audio files at 48khz instead and see if the problem returns.
Just opened a completely different project that has a 48kHz 24 bit audio file, and it is previewing at a pitched up speed. It's a wave file, and is the only audio track in the project.

Bonus third question:
3) If you change the output to a different device, does the behavior change?
Super-secret fourth question:
