I realize that this is going to seem like a really dumb question. But are you certain that there are image files in the folder that is highlighted? I see no reason why they wouldn't be displayed if there are files there.
Positive. There are probably a hundred or so subfolders to my "Photos" folder and all of them have photos - jpegs and RAWs. No matter which one I select, I get nothing.
I don't know. You could try unchecking "include subfolders". But it probably won't make any difference. Is that hard drive set to shut down after a period of time?
Toggling the subfolders box doesn't help. HDD is running.
I'm probably just doing something wrong. :/

EDIT: I deleted my Preferences file and that seemed to fix it. No idea what was wrong. If anyone else needs it, it's at: C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences\Lightroom 5 Preferences.agprefs
