Renders speed up massively after restarting After Effects

In CS6 I used to purge the memory and use freemempro or whatever thingy to flush out the system memory before a render and it seemed to do the trick. In CC2014 I've noticed that even on not-particularly intensive renders, closing down AE and re-opening it again will speed the process up by 3X at least. I'm not using any different multi-processing settings than I ever do. Is this just 'one of those things' or am I missing something here. This happens on both Macbook Pro 2012 non-retina and a 2009 Mac Pro.
