Did you migrate this from another computer, or is it the original install?
If you force quit, you might now have some bad data in the InDesign Recovery folder. See Replace Your Preferences for the path (it's in the same folder as InDesign SavedData) and Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 and later for how to show the folders if your OS is new enough that they're hidden.
Since you say it's been several years since you used ID it's pretty hard to pin down what has changed and caused the problem. Could be a font manager update, tablet driver, or something else entirely.
Have you upgraded the operating system or made any other change?
Hi Bob - Yes, I updated the OS in the last four years. I'm hoping there
is an update I can do for ID i guess. Since I have reset the preferences
already. I may need to move the plugins back over to the ID folder. I

In place O/S updates are nothing short of a crapshoot and if you’ve moved to Yosemite you are now in unsupported territory for CS5.
