That is correct the was removed. Adobe stated the were using and unsupported Microsoft interface. To hel with the problem I purchases FastPictureCieder Codec packafe. It will generate Thumbnails for RAW and PSD file in Microsoft dialog when you select to view the list of file that way. Its less the $15.00 you can see at least 3 PSD thumbnails here and a CR2 RAW thumbnail. Windows can also show a larger thumbnail in a right side panel
You can also download and install the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack and depending how new the camera is that generated the camera raw files you might see some preview thumbnails.
And adobe has an dng codec for the dng files
There are other Codec Pack out there. I have been using the FastPictureViewer Codep Pack for years and been very happy. For it does some Adobe Formats like PSD and PDD as well as RAW file. And like RAW files keep changing with each new camera Photoshop keeps changing So there is no guarantee that every PSD or PDD file will display correctly. I have not had any problems and Updates have been free. My Cameras are a few years old and cost much. I do not plain on getting a new body so I have not been updating the Codec package I see no need to. I do no know if the Microsoft codec Support Adobe PSD And PDD or does DNG as FastPictuteViewer does. However I see no reason to use DNG.. Microsoft Package also uses some free third party library in their code..
I just checked FastPictureViewer Codec Pack web site currently a single user licence is down to a single $10 payment there is also a 15 Day Free trial.
