Lightroom is updated on approximately a quarterly basis. Lightroom updates include bug fixes, performance enhancements, and support for new cameras. The support for your camera was added in Lightroom 4.1. You will not be able to use Lightroom 3 with that camera unless you use the free DNG converter provided from Adobe to create digital negative copies of your raw images. There have been many improvements in Lightroom since version 3, and you would do yourself a big favor to upgrade to Lightroom 5.
Thanks, Jim---that makes sense. I just finished trying Adobe's Creative Cloud, but I don't appreciate the way they charge by the month or year for Photoshop 6 and Lightroom 5. I usually upgrade after a couple of versions. Did you say that Lightroom 4.1 will read my RAW pics from my EOS5DMKIII? If that would work, I think I'll purchase LR4 to work with my PS5 for right now. Appreciate your help.

Any version of Lightroom from 4.1 onwards will open Raw Canon 5D Mark III files.
Lightroom 4 is no longer sold by Adobe. The current version is Lightroom 5.7.1.
