I am making the lay-out of a book that will be printed in 2 separate volumes: Volume I and Volume II. Both volumes start from page 1. Cross-references have to be made from one book to the other. So I would like to include in the page number, the volume number as well, e.g.:( 'see page I 357 and page II 268'). In the page numbering, I have given the chapters from volume one, a prefix I, and for volume II, the prefix II, but they are not shown on the pages, because I don't want it there. Is there a special code in which to incorporate the prefix in the pages when making cross-references? Or is there perhaps another way to do this? Thank you.
I believe when you create the cross-reference you should see a little pencil icon next to the format dropdown in the new cross-reference dialog. If you click that you will have the opportunity to enter custom text before or after the page number.
Yes, the pencil icon allows editing. I like to know how to insert the prefix of the book volume as a kind of text-variable so that it automatically chooses the volume number where the reference is made to.
You have to collect al files in one book file. THe text variable for a different INDD file is "Chapter".
