Pablo, first just breathe slowly and relax...
What operating system are you using and are your file on the computer or an external disk???
I'm trying to relax, its just all very concerning.
I believe my operating system is OS X. I am pretty sure I have the originals on my computer and on a hard drive. Time machine is inactive and I really want to retrieve the originals directly as there are too many hours of work and I haven't done anything wrong.
Thanks I really appreciate your help.
Oh you have two threads here so i am getting confused. I am going to lock the other so we are on one page.
We will get everything in order but let us work carefully, slowly and methodically.
Ok first search you Mac in finder using Spotlight for files ending in .lrcat
Tell us how many you find or even better place a screen shot of the search result if you can manage that.
I am way down in New Zealand where it is Monday night but I still have some time to help...
Sorry, just trying to get it solved asap. I have searched in my finder
under spotlight for .Ircat and nothing came up. Elsewhere in Lightoom
preferences I have seen other .Ircat, which isn't what I am after.
Unfortunately I dont know how to take a screen shot. It seem 's that some
of my images have transfered over to my hard drive and vice versa to
Lightroom. So I am trying to remove these from Lightroom with great
It would be amazing to transfer everything in its original form as I dont
know how this has happened.
Thanks for responding considering its so late.

See something is not right if you can have a catalog (.lrcat) yet Spotlight sees nothing.
Tell me your OS by clicking the Apple symbol in the Top Left of your computer and seeing what is shown when you then click on "About this Mac"
You will see something like this:
Tell us what version you have...
To do a screen shot you use the shift+command+4 and you will get a cursor to drag across what you want to capture. Then use the camera icon
Ok before you can upgrade to Lr5 you would need to update your OS. You can do that for free from Apple.
However first we still need to find you catalog..
Do you have external drives or is everything on the iMac???
I am going to bed soon..
When you open Lightroom under the File Menu and Open Recent, how many Catalogs show there???
Thanks for OS update through Apple.
I think most important images are on my external drive somehow, hoping
there somewhere on my iMac
7 catalogs show when I open recent.
Get some sleep.

Ok so your search was not effective but we now know you have more than one catalog. Write down the names of the catalogs on that list from "Open recent" so you can search better . Then open each of them to see what is in them. Make a note of how many files are in All Photographs beside the names on the list.
We may attempt to consolidate them.
I am going to bed now but where are you located??
I am in Perth. Will do what you said, although I feel none of the images I want are there. Once again I am pretty sure they have been exported to my hard drive. Will get back to you tomorrow.
Sleep well and many thanks.

Ok, at least we are relatively close!!
remember that the files are never "in" Lightroom. Lightroom just links to the files on your disk.
How many photos do you think you might have?? Just a guess.
For perspective I have a catalog with 628k files attached..... so I will be able to sort you out. Just time and patience is important.
Great, many thanks. Probably 20000 or so photos of which 200 to 300 I really want to retrieve in their original form.

Hope you slept well. I have been busy looking into many of the things you
have told me.
Where should I start so much info.
There are 7 Ircat folders. Some empty some contain approx 7000 images. Some
of the images /altered on lightroom are here few maybe 50. Although they
are missing or offline and now in the CR2 format ( photoshop elements),
which is very strange. I think this an issue as to why it may have all
gone, changed? In another Ircat folder many images are in the condition I
left them although not all of them, the latest 2013 are missing. Also in
another extension Ircat folder many of the images are there I imagine the
same 7000 but cant be seen?
On my hard drive there is a folder I cannot open, it reads in progress and
says no App to open document, search App store for Application. Perhaps
this is the key, I also have little storage space on my hard drive.
Many images under 2012 on hard drive have the tiff image, with altered
version created on lightroom some now show as CR2 version to view the photo
photoshop elements opens up automatically, which I never use. I do feel
this is a major reason/ issue?
Also under certain folders with dates my images appear pixelated or blurry.
Under another heading the jpg version is great approx 73 some are missing
the latest and most important, unfortunately I want in Tiff.
Under another folder on hard drive I have many of the images I am chasing
approx 60 but the size is a concern 2-2.5mb, should be around 40mb?
In another folder all are in CR2 photoshop elements.
Time Machine, which I'm sure was inactive tells me it could not back up
Under thumbnails it looked promising all in DNG many missing and in CR2
I thought I would let you know in case I haven't already that the memory on
the imac is very low, hence why I began trashing/ deleting images yesterday
thet are saved on my hard drive this is when all this mess occured.
Are there short cuts I can use to remove images that are duplicates without
lightroom becoming tempermental?
Were too next? I am hoping the originals can be found and installed in
their original form.
I really appreciate all of your help and time, please help me

How big is the HD in your Mac and the external one you have, how big is that too??
You are short on space alright.... now can you afford to go and buy a new 2TB external?? That would be great if you can....
Okay, I have purchased a 2TB. Will I be able to retrieve my edited images
in the TIFF format?
My current folder structure is terrible, but how do I know this wont happen

Are you sure that viewing them now in the CR2 format ( photo shop elements)
unexpectedly from the original Lightroom format has nothing to do with this
Shouldn't the location of these important missing files be determined
first? Is this the only form of communicating?

The files are in the formats they are and Lightroom has no "format" for files. I think at some point the CR2 files have become associated with PSE... this does not affect Lightroom at all. See Lightroom cannot open any files, it reads the data and creates its own previews with the catalog....
I'll contact you off line through email (I can do that as a moderator).....
We wil use Lightroom to copy the files to the new disk and delete the old ones!! Step by step, slowly, slowly...
