Could you post before/after screen clips of the rooftop area. Also, what are your settings for the graduated filter. Are you using a large exposure adjustment.

I also haven't used any adjustment for the filter. I will search that.
I went back and reduced the amount of the adjustment and the “halo” went away. I ended up eliminating the filter and adjusting the tone curve and exposure.

Have a play with the Grad Filter Bill, it is great. Look at the flow and density amounts....
I think it is a good idea to use the global sliders (highlights, shadows, whites, blacks etc) first as many times these are all you need but as Geoff said, the Graduated Filter can really help on difficult photos. After using the graduated filter you can use the brush to back off the adjustment in selected areas. This is not the same as the graduated filter mask modifiers in the new ACR and probably in Lr6.
