    Exporting as html

    CarolLane
Forgive me for being new and inexperienced with both Fireworks and this forum, but I am having trouble exporting a fireworks png file to dreamweaver. Tghe file is showing up in DW but we are having trouble manipulating it. sssThe FW file itself is kind of like a frame with a banner at the top, buttons with drop-down menus on the left , a banner on the right, an animated gif banner on the bottom and a blank space for body copy in the center. We want to put text from dreamweaver in the blank center of the frame but whenever we type anything into it, it splits the FW frame horizontally leaving a blank spot to both the right and left of the text. The blank spot vertically expands as you type more lines into the body copy. Is that at all understandable? Do I have to treat that blank space in the middle in some way so this doesn't happen to the frame we exported from Fireworks? Do I need to export the frame differently? Should I be asking this on the Dreamweaver forum? Any help will be appreciated.

      Thanks in advance!

Don't use layers in DW until you understand the underlying HTML concepts.

You need to leave a hole in your FW file for the HTML text. If you export
everything as a graphic, there is no room for text, so adding text causes
the entire FW HTML structure to break, which will likely happen anyhow. FW
builds very fragile HTML table structures....

You need to create the images in Fireworks, export them to your
Dreamweaver site, and then build the tables in Dreamweaver. Here's a
tutorial that shows you how to do that.

Wow - thank you everyone for the replies! My DH typed the initial question. What I have done is create the "frame" in FW with an HTML slice for the body copy. The HTML slice is at the top of the Web Layer. Then I exported it as HTML, and opened it in DW. My goal is to save it as a template and change the body for each page in DW. When I opened it in DW It looked perfect. I saved it as a template and told DW where I wanted the body copy (HTML slice). However, when I type in the body copy, it messes up the "frame", dropping everything below the text and leaving empty spaces as if the frame was cut in half horizontally and the bottom dropped down.

I did this once before successfully with another design - http://atlantadogworks.com/talent.html - this page works, but I can't figure out what I have done wrong with the new one!

When I'm exporting from FW as HTML, I am choosing the following options:
                  Export: HTML and Images
                  Slices: Export Slices

Am I doing something wrong there? Did I export it as a graphic?

As for DW layers, I do not know anything about them, and have not tried to use them, so I don't think I messed it up in DW.

                  I really appreciate any help.

                      Carol,

I want to point out a real quick frame of reference to Murray and Linda. Along with Linda's tip with that referenced link to Firework article. In that article, the contributor has noted that you should have some understanding on how Fireworks and Dreamweaver's tool works. In addition to that, the contributor also note, like Murray has suggested tons of time, that you need to know some HTML.

Along with that, I recommend that you should roll up your sheeves starting to learn and understand CSS. I am not overly fond of table-based website. But it gets you started and going.

That is my two-cent tip or suggestion.

I spoke too soon - the simple rollovers and swap images work perfectly live, however the pop-ups (should be on frisbees) and the Flash animated gif (supposed to be on bottom left corner) do not... Any suggestions?

Not that these are pointing to your local hard drive.

Thanks, Linda - I changed the code of the file to point hopefully in the right place. However, the pop-ups still aren't showing up. I did notice that the code refers to at least two different css files. Is it confused?

PS - when I test the Fireworks file (preview in browser) it works fine. After exporting to HTML and inserting in DW and making it live it stops working.
