.PHP files won't show up in design view.

Ive been developing a website for my company, and all last week I worked on the site using .php extensions for the includes and whatnot, and it was fine, I worked in design view and code view switching back and forth, but strangely, over the weekend something magical must've happened, because Dreamweaver 8 no longer allows me to view .PHP files in design view. I can change the extensions to .html but its very annoying to have to do that every time I want to edit something.

      Please can anybody help?

      Thanks in advance.

          Is casing an issue here?

Are your files names *.php or *.PHP?

Ah, they're .php - here's the site so far if it helps at all:

                http://www.walsallva.org.uk/NEWSITE/index.php

This worked fine in design view last week, but doesn't this week. =(

Are you using includes or scripted includes?

there are several pairs of <body> tags, which will totally confuse dw design
                  view.

the "WVA - News" appears to be the include- and is a complete html document
instead of just what is correct for where it's inserted.

                    rough fix-
suggest using an external stylesheet for the site, so you don't need to have
each style in the head section. This will also reduce the number of styles
                    and keep them consistent.

edit the WVA - News file. Select just after the <body> tag and erase to top
of file. Erase </body> and </html> at the end of file.
(tip- attach a "design time" stylesheet to the included file to see and
select the styles of the new external css file)

or- brute force fix if don't care about syntax- go into dw
preferences/invisible items and turn off rendering of included files. That
doesn't fix the problem, just prevents the errors from confusing design
                    view.

I didn't know php includes showed up in design view at all, I thought they just showed up as a little yellow php symbol.

Not sure the difference between scripted and non scripted includes, I'm a tad new to this sort of thing. :(

I have the 'included' stuff in a seperate .php page, which does have another <body> tag to it... should I remove the body tag on there? ... but... that doesn't explain why index.php won't even allow me to switch to design view. :/ It's completley greyed out.

Thanks for the tips but... design view won't open at all, there's no errors or anything like that, it just -wont open-. It wont let me click "design view", it just remains stuck in code view, but it allowed me to view design view last week.

take a look in dw preferences/file types

Is .php in the list of "open only in code view"?

does a new php file open in design view? Is it only THIS file that is code
                          view only?

.php wasn't in the 'open only in codeview' extensions list, and new .php files also only allow for code viewing, and every .php file that I have so far can only be viewed in code view, when last week they were fine to be viewed in design view.

I'm not at work anymore so I can't re-check or play around with any preferences and settings, seems that this isn't a common problem. :(

I really really appreciate your help and time by the way. Thanks very very much.

                                pls do this-

open a new blank .html page in dw using the File-->New dialog box.
Does this show in design view? Are the code/split/design buttons at top left
                                active?

now- do File-->Save As and save as .php
design view active? If you close then reopen the page also?

what has possibly changed in dw settings/computer in the last week?
Have you edited any configuration files? installed any extensions? anything?

and just for the heck of it- assuming you are on xp or osx, log in as a
different User and open dw with a php file. results??

                                > Any ideas anyone? Im really desperate. :(
