Was you original order for LR5?
yes it was.
Was Lightroom 5 an upgrade purchase? Did you have an older version of Lightroom?
Does the serial number start with 1160?
How did you install Lightroom on the new hard drive?
What operating system are you using?
It does start with 1160, yes. Perhaps I'll redownload it directly from my original order, I imagine that's probably it, in fact.
I am not entirely sure about this but 1160 might indicate an LR4 version upgraded to LR5. My serial starts with 1160 which corresponds to my original LR4 purchase but I am on LR5.7.1, I upgraded when it was released. So, you might need to install LR4 first and then upgrade.
Downloading the software again won't change anything.
Jim asked several important questions - not least these: "Was Lightroom 5 an upgrade purchase? Did you have an older version of Lightroom?"
Can you answer this, please? The suspicion is that you've bought an "upgrade" rather than a "full" licence: an upgrade licence will only work if you've had a prevous licenced version of Lr, because you need both the old and new licences numbers to activate an upgrade.

All Lr serials begin with 1160, Modesto - right back to Lr3 for sure (and almost certainly before).
In my order history, where I'm downloading the thing from, it says LR5. So I'm guessing it's LR5 that I bought, this was only last year when I bought the original thing.
Problem solved. I re-downloaded Lightroom directly from my order history and the serial number went through first time. Thanks for the help, guys.
You are absoultely right.
However, I just noticed the following (for the record):
1) I run LR5.7.1, upgraded to it whenever LR5 came out
2) However, "My products and services" only showed my LR4 version and serial
3) I had to go Help\Lightroom Registration to register LR5 (after doing that the LR5 and its serial shows under "My products and services")
I must admit that I find the registration text completely misleading, this is what it said before registering LR5. This actually inacurate for an upgrade.
