Your serial number is for any two compatible computers, with one being in use at any time - you should be fine.
When you say that the activation code "didn't work" what - exactly - does that mean? Any error messages?
No error message, just the last box for the activation code lights up in red

just had 10 mins online with adobe, they can't seem to work it out either, they tell me my account shows lightroom 5 registered to me and the serial number etc but when i try to look in my account no products are registered, we have tried 4 computers and still have the same issue.
they won't tell me what the number is though, now being escalated for 24-48 hours to sort out. must be an issue their end with access. thx for your reply
Just for thoroughness, when you upgrade from an older to a newer version of Lr, you need both the old (Lr2) and new (Lr5) licence numbers - you should be prompted for both. Maybe (somehow) you're trying to get an upgrade licence accepted as a full licence?
anythings possible keith, it only prompts me for lr5 which they tell me is the registered product, so I'm lost, will have to wait for their team to escalate it.
