Don't convert your image to CMYK. Place the RGB image with color profile into InDesign.
When I then place the new psd in InDesign the image comes up as a solid block of colour instead.
Have you inadvertently added transparency to the placed art? Direct select it and check the Effects panel. Also make sure there's no clipping path applied—select the image and Object>Clipping Path>Options...

However, I then clicked 'Fit content proportionally' and that seemed to solve it.

Did you place into an existing frame? Perhaps the image was very large and you were seeing only the upper left corner.
Yes, I think that is what happened, as the images were very large.
