numerous uninstalls and reinstalls
If one reinstall didn't work, I would then suggest one more go at uninstalling, followed by using the Adobe Clean Tool to remove whatever leftover bits of the installation are still scattered about your system.
If that doesn't work, I would suggest replying to this thread with more details (operating system, version of Creative Suite or Cloud, word-for-word reporting of error messages, and so on).
And I believe there is a Java update for Yosemite that fixes the java errors.
Thanks for responding. After uninstalling, using the Adobe Clean Tool, and reinstalling with no results, I erased my entire MacMini. Short version is that it once again told me there was a Java component I needed: "to open adobe indesign cs5 you need to install the legacy java se 6 runtime"
So I downloaded the update from this page: Java for OS X 2014-001
And now we are back to my original problem. I try to open an InDesign file, or just run the program, and it simply doesn't do anything. It's not freezing, it doesn't say "not responding," it just looks something like this:
You can see that the menu options that matter (New Document) are grayed out. It's the same if I try to "Open Recent."

I notice inthe first screen shot you are running Chrome. Disable the browser plugins and see what happens.
Disabling browser plugins did not help. I even deleted Chrome. I once again uninstalled and reinstalled CS5. I cleared every Adobe product and reference I could find from my system. When I ran InDesign and chose "Open," it didn't even bring up a window to browse for a file to open. Then the menu went all gray again.
I'm wiping my hard drive clean again and starting over, this time with no migration from my MBP.
You may simply be out of luck unless some other user chimes in who has successfully managed to get CS5 to work on Yosemite (it is NOT supported).
Did you ever run the cleaner tool after uninstalling? That would be important to fix any problems from a migration. See CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3
