I'm on CS5.
Recently upgraded to 16 gigs of ram, and the entire system flies like a perfectly spiraled football.
Was using after effects to edit some HD video at full resolution, and while it wasn't exactly setting any speed records it would play at about 22fps without a ram preview.
I tried messing with some of the settings to get better performance, and restarted my machine - now it runs like a Commodore 64.
I undid all my changes and it's still slower than molasses.
Any idea what I did wrong?

CS5 is not supported on Yosemite. It's slightly surprising that you are running it at all!
What settings did you change?
Pretty much fiddled with everything, so I suppose it's going to be tough to fix. Maybe it is because it's CS5.
