    Best settings for desktop i7?

    lonnrot Level 1

I installed After Effects CC 2014 on a computer with i74790k, Radeon 6850 and 8 GB of RAM.

The program runs smoothly but it makes Windows 8.1 a bit unresponsive, for example opening and closing folders take longer, also browsing files, opening the start menu, etc.

What are the best settings for decent editing and desktop stability?

There is no magic switch. Your system is what these days is considered the bare minimum to work with AE. AE uses a lot of RAM and you probably also haven't bothered to check your cache and MP render settings, so it gobbles up your disk performance as well...

            Bare minimun according to whom?

            Minimun requirements according to Adobe:

            • Intel Core2 Duo or AMD Phenom II processor with 64-bit support
            • Microsoft Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1
            • 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)

            Check your facts.

Check your memory and multiprocessing settings. The RAM reserved for other applications probably needs to be higher.

According to almost everyone who uses it. The 4GB is the bare minimum for it to run. However, you need more than 8 for it to run well. I'd consider 16 as a minimum for it to run well, but considering how cheap and easy it is to upgrade RAM, I'd put more than that in your system if possible.

I just ordered another 8 GBs. It's kind of funny. When I asked for recommended specs for video editing, almost everybody concluded that 8GB was more than enough. However, After Effects is not exactly video editing, right?

16 GBs does indeed make a lot of sense.

                  Right!
