i have an idea about revealing the used footage in the project panel
sometimes you want to edit the project for a client you start dragging and dropping the footage ....
sometimes it take you a while to realize if you used this footage before or not , so i think it would be a great idea marking the used footage
(example : check mark, column, ...)
AE already does this, but not in the way you seek.
When you highlight a piece of footage, it will tell you the number of compositions in which it has been used in the project. You see this in the panel at the very top of the project panel.
I must admit that I haven't looked at all the columns in the project panel, and it may already be there, too.

You can also filter in the Project panel for used or unused footage items. Just type one of the following into the search field at the top of the Project panel:
