Can you import an indexed Word file and keep the indexing?

I am working on a book project where the file is in Word and I will be importing it into InDesign. The author might have someone else index the Word file. Is it possible to import the indexed file and have the index terms converted to InDesign indexing?

      Thanks!

I'm searching for an answer to this as well. What I've found is that the index entries are lost if you "place" the file, but are retained if you cut and paste from Word. You must have Preferences > Clipboard Handling > When pasting text... set to All Information.

Unfortunately other information is lost when you cut and paste instead of place so I am looking to see if there's a setting in InDesign that I'm missing.
