how to save guides in CC library

    Jane Smith 2300

      Hi,

I have the latest updates to Indesign CC (Feb, 2015). Windows.

I was given to understand I could save guides to a CC library, but I can't seem to do it. Can someone please explain?

Am I wrong in assuming that guides can be saved as described above? For that matter, can margins and column guide info be saved that way? or is there a better way to save it?

      Thanks

      PL

Guidelines are not supported with CC libraries.

CC libraries use snippets, and snippets don't support guide lines neither.

@Jane – saving guides to CC Library is not possible.

However saving guides to ordinary InDesign libraries is possible:
(That's no new feature, present since at least InDesign CS4)

            1. Select the guides you want to store in the library

            2. Create a new library (a *.indl file)

            3. Chose "Add Item" in the Library Panel menu

Now you can try to "Migrate Item(s) to CC-Library" from your Library Panel menu.

Or you could try to migrate one single library item (the guides) to a CC-Library, if you use the little CC symbol with the arrow at the bottom of the panel.
But all that would'nt work with guides. Error message: "… objects like guides are not supported."

Here some screenshots from my German UI:

Guides can be stored in a Library:

Here I'm trying to migrate a selected Library item "Guides" to a CC-Library I already named "Guides":

@Willi – as shown above, this time you are wrong:

              Snippets do support guides.

You can store all objects you can select in snippets.
Select some guides, export to IDMS, place the IDMS.

@Willi – with a little hack in your text editor, you can even merge two snippets together.

The one with the guides and other objects.

                1. If you export the following selected rectangle to a snippet file:

                4-ExportRectangleToSnippet.png

                2. Now open the saved guides snippet in a text editor.

                5-GuidesSnippetInTextEditor.png

                3. Search for "Guide self" in the code and copy all the XML lines that are describing all guides in the snippet to the IDMS snippet where the red rectangle is stored:

                6-MergedCode.png

As you can see, just below of the inserted code is the description of the rectangle.

Save that with *.idms ending in your text editor to a new name.

                Place the snippet.

You will not see the guides in the place gun, because we have no preview for that, but it's working.

The guides come along with the red rectangle.

                However:
Storing the guides together with any other object to a Library is not possible.
But only because guides and other page objects are not selectable together.

I made a little movie to show what will happen, if you place the combined snippet with the guides and the red rectangle:
