Can you pl elaborate your requirement?..Do you mean that you would like to import the puzzle as a single SVG from illustrator to Animate and then separate them( + you want to edit the color of imported SVG) ?
I figured out that I can edit the color of the puzzle pieces once in Edge and that I can't import a layered file into Edge and maintain the layers (I must import the objects one at a time). But I have a new issue. The puzzle pieces are irregular shapes within a bounding box. So when I fit the pieces together the bounding boxes overlap. That becomes a problem when I add actions to the individual pieces. Is there a way to import the puzzle pieces so that the bounding area takes the actual shape of the puzzle piece?

You have to use an svg file with all the puzzle pieces for that. png always have a square of rectangle bounding box.
