break up AI graphics, or import same file X-number times?

I am creating infographics in one Illustrator file. I will pull them into InDesign and my question: what's the easiest load for InDesign: break up each infographic into its own file and import into ID one by one, or import the "mother file" as many times as there are elements I want, and just "scootch" over to where the desired item is?

easier for editing maybe on the AI side, but does it have ID needlessly importing more than needed for each element of a multi-element file? is ID "smart" enough to know that you only want the bit that's shown?

      thank you in advance.
