The first time you generate the table of contents, run LiveTOC (you'll
need to set it up with the appropriate paragraph styles, etc.), and then
you'll never have to bother with updating the TOC again, for the
lifetime of the document.
You'll also have the flexibility of formatting the TOC completely as you
like, without risking losing your manual labours!
Interesting script i'm sure but whatever i do i get the message that demo allows only 5 live links per document. And nothing happends
I made a new document with two section
created a regular TOC (now has 2 entries showing, on page 2 and 6)
clicked the livetoc trial script and i get the message.
where did i go wrong ?
It's a 2-stage process:
(1) With nothing selected, run LiveTOC. In the setup window, select the
paragraph style/s you've used for chapter titles. Set the separator
between the chapter title and page number that you've used (probably a
Tab or a right-indent Tab or something), and click OK.
(2) Now, back in the document, select the TOC text and run LiveTOC and
it should work.
There is a video tutorial on the web page I linked to which you may want
If it's still not working, I'll be happy to do a screenshare or
something, just send me an email: admin (at] id-extras.com
WHat i tried to say is that i tried to do this but i never got to see the interface, i got the error message as soon i ran the script =/
Ah and i'm on CS5 if that helps
It worked to the point where i can see the interface.
i entered the paragraph styles i used to make the TOC
Chose "replace existing nulbers..."
From "1st word ..." until tab
So far not mean messages.
But then how does it work, because if i add pages nothing changes in the TOC...
CS5 should be fine.
To see the settings screen, everything should be well and truly
deselected (Edit > Deselect All) before LiveTOC is run.
If you did that and still do not see the settings screen, something's
wrong, and if you send me an email, we can try and resolve it off-forum.
Ariel, my bad really.
I miss read and was a bit too eager
This works fine indeed!
If i add chapters after running the script what is the method ? Because it doesn't seem to take note the new chapter.
If the chapters use the same paragraph styles as the other ones,
essentially just select the new chapters in the TOC and run LiveTOC again.
How you add the new chapters to the TOC is a different question: If
you've done a lot of manual formatting to the TOC which you're loath to
lose, it's probably best to type them in manually. But if there's been
no or very little manual styling, just go ahead and regenerate the TOC
from InDesign, select it, and run LiveTOC again on the whole thing.
