To elucidate. I had LR5 on a previous computer, including collections. Only the collections didn't transfer.
The Collections are stored in the LR Catalog. If you had copied over your Catalog from the other computer to the new one all your collections would of been there.
Now that you have the images on the new computer, "IF", they were placed in the same folder structure (IE Same folder names and locations) then copying over the original Catalog "Should" include your collections. If they are in different folder names or on a different drive letter or drive name then you might be able to to use the Locate Images feature to find them.
Thanks. I was initially nonplussed when I read your answer, as my old hard drive was destroyed. But now I realize that it gives me a tremendous opportunity to reorganize my photos (fortunately there are fewer than 10,000 of them).
If you are going to reorganize, then use Keywords to re-organize instead of Collections.
Keywords can stay with the photos (if you save the metadata), while Collections only exist inside of Lightroom.

Were you able to recover the LR catalog or a catalog backup file? All of your LR edits keywords, collections and any other work you did in LR are contained in the LR catalog file, which must be migrated to the new computer along with your image files.

If you move image files (i.e. reorganize) using File Explorer or Finder they will become disconnected from the LR catalog. This will cause you to lose everything you've done inside LR unless you used DNG file format or XMP files with 'Automatically write metadata into XMP file' enabled in the Catalog preferences. Even then you will lose your collections and any work done in the Book or Web modules.
I installed a new LR onto the new computer, then imported all my photos from the external hard drive that I'd been using on the old computer (no photos stored in the old computer's C: drive). It looks like the only thing I'm missing is my collections. Keywords, edits done in Photoshop Elements and saved as .TIF files, all seem to be there.

It sounds like you created a new catalog on the new computer and imported all your photos into this new catalog. You need to move over your old catalog (Lightroom 5from the old computer to the new computer and then open that catalog on the new computer to relink the photos on the external hard drive. Please read steps #4 through #8 at the instruction link I provided.

You probably saved the keywords and edits to the file metadata with Preferences 'Automatically write metadata into XMP file' enabled. Do you have raw files, do they show edits and keywords? Do you see XMP files next to the raw files in File Explorer or Finder? If so the edits and keywords will show in LR because that information is written to the XMP file and TIFF EXIF metadata. But your collections and any work done in the Book or Web modules will not show because that information is only contained in the old LR catalog (Lightroom 5
This is not fun. It appears that my old catalog was put onto my new computer from when files were transferred over by the people who built the computer. I then downloaded a new LR5, which of course created its own catalog. Then I Imported photos into the new LR from the remote hard disk on which I had all my photos.
I now have Four catalogs, and several other files, as follows:
New catalog (3.9 MB) - shows 151 "all photos", but none are visible in list view
New catalog (4.1 MB) - shows 152 "all photos", but none are visible in list view
Old Previews (9.4 GB)
Old Smart Previews (71.6 MB)
New Previews (877 MB)
New Smart Previews (1.8 MB)
Old Catalog (163 MB) (SHOWS 10,355 "all photos" and 3838 on the external drive - but the arrangement is screwy (I arrange folders by date, and many months are missing)
New Catalog (78 MB) (shows 6569 "all photos" and 6569 on the external drive)
New Catalog.lrc.lock (7 bytes)
New Catalog.lrcat-journal (24.5 KB)
Obviously I don't want to lose any photos. Also, it looks like the new catalog doesn't have Smart Previews for all photos. Is there a way to combine Catalogs into one, eliminating any duplicates, and create Smart previews for photos that don't have them?
Believe me, I really appreciate your thoughtful assistance. I am not at all computer savvy, but I follow step-by-step directions pretty well.
Go to File>Open Catalog and open your original catalog. If it comes up with a bunch of question marks use Find Images to locate your images in the new location or in same location on the external drive.
