    Drop Down Menus in Fireworks

    CharlesAndersen
Hey guys, I hope someone can help me out. I recently purchased Dreamweaver 8 and Fireworks 8 with the intention of creating drop down menus on a website for my farm. However, I have run into some issues. Specifically, I have been creating menus in fireworks 8. I have done so by creating 130 by 400 pixel images, placing text into down along the image, and then circling each text area with the rectangular hotspot tool. I have also used the rectangular vector too to create images behind the text to bring it out more. After using the rectangular hotspot tool I have then gone to the add drop down menu function and created my drop down menus. When I have completed these steps I am then able to preview my menus in my webbrowser (safari). Then, I have exported my menus to a folder on my desktop using the export wizard. With this wizard I have tried both .gif and .jpg file types. The problem that I'm having is that once I place these files into my page (using the insert > fireworks html function and then selection the .htm file from within the folder on my desktop), I am able to preview my menus in my browser, however, when uploaded onto my site they do not show up and instead I see none of my typed links, and simply a listing of all the links in the submenus below a series of broken image link logos. In order to save my pages to my sites, I have simply saved them, not gone to the "synchronize" feature within the site manager window. I assume that I am unable to get these menus to work because I am not putting a certain file onto my site. Does anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks so much.

Here is a link to my page. www.charlestowncooperativefarm.org This page was originally created in Adobe Golive 6.0 Could the formating of the page in Adobe Golive be wrecking things up?

I know right where that farm is! I'm off 23 between 724 and 100....

I see 13 links to stylesheets on that page - what the heck?

              @import url("../../../Desktop/MENU/Menu Complet (?) left side
              charlestownfarm/tomatosii.css");

              Goofy names....

Personally, the page is a complete wreck. Your table structure is fragile,
and your code is, well, see what W3C has to say about it -

              http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http://www.charlestowncooperativefarm.org/

Plenty of GL-specific stuff in there.

I think you should start over on this page.

As you said before, the site is kind of a wreck. However, I just uploaded a second page based entirely off of a template in dreamweaver. I replicated exactly the same steps that I performed with the site before in terms of placing the Fireworks HTML menu onto the page and still managed to get the same results. Any ideas? Here is the URL to the second page. http://www.charlestowncooperativefarm.org/indexII.html

Two good ones, but you won't like either -

                  1. Don't use FW to write your HTML
                  2. Never use DW/FW pop-up menus

In the first case, the HTML written by FW (unless you are familar enough
with both FW and HTML to know what you should and shouldn't do in making
your slices) is completely rigid and will break with the slightest change to
the "shape" of the content. You should use FW to create graphic elements
and do all of your HTML work in DW (and NOT in DW's Layout mode!).

In the second case, the menus written by DW/FW's built-in function are so
awkward and poorly implemented that they will be a continuing problem for
you and your visitors. There are much, MUCH better ways to do such menus,
but it will require a bit of study and work on your part to get there.

Next, judging from the look of your page linked below, you must not be
working within a defined site in DW - are you? All of the links to all of
the external files are broken, since they point to the files on YOUR hard
                  drive -

                    CharlesAndersen Level 1
How exactly would I work within a defined site in Dreamweaver? I am completely new the program, and used golive 6 to do this site several years ago so the site truly is a wreck.

Is there really no easy way to make drop down menus in Fireworks though? What exactly should I use to make drop down menus? In fireworks, how exactly would I do the slices to succeed? Is there a common mistake that I am probably making?

                    Thanks

There is really no way to make reliable and maintainable drop down menus in
                      FW, for real.

                      > What exactly should I use to make drop down menus?

First of all, you would use an HTML authoring system, not a graphics editor.
Then you would use one of these methods -

Check the uberlink and MacFly tutorials at PVII -
                      http://www.projectseven.com/

and the Navbar tutorial/articles at Thierry's place
                      http://tjkdesign.com/articles/dropdown/

Or this one (more recent article):
                      http://tjkdesign.com/articles/Pure_CSS_Dropdown_Menus.asp
