Looks like Flex Data Services is the way to go. For anyone having same need:
Flex Data Services offers data-push capability, enabling data to automatically be pushed to the client application without polling. This highly scalable capability can push data to thousands of concurrent users, providing up-to-the-second views of critical data, such as stock trader applications, live resource monitoring, shop floor automation, and more."
FDS is the way to go for large scale applications (keep in mind the licensing costs
for enterprise applications)
You also can use an xmlSocket to push data to clients assuming you can write a java class that can read/write to a socket. Of course this is not a good a solution if you need to pass through a firewall as you would have to open the port.
Thank you for the reply. My app is definitely not enterprise... maybe only 5-10 simultaneous users per instance, but enough to require data push. I see that FDS is now LiveCycle?
