    Ideas for form field

    szymas
      I would like to know if anyone has an idea or has seen this:

      We have a form with a multi-select field on it, with over 1200 categories in this select box in which you can select up to ten items to search on.

      Example:

      ...
      wire
      wire dies
      wire dies - Carbon
      wire dies - Plastic
      wire dies - Steel
      wire dies - Other
      wire rope
      ...

      What I would like to do is this: have some kind of "visual" tiered system that would allow them to drill into the categories with multple items

      Example

      ...
      wire
      wire dies -- ALL
      Carbon
      Plastic
      Steel
      Other
      wire rope
      ...

      This would make the selection area shorter and cleaner.

      Any ideas?

      thanks

          You might try this:

            I'm sure I can cohearse coldfusion to work within this script, but if I want ten items to search on that means I would need 10 select boxes. Maybe I should go alittle futher ;-)

            Flash-based collection recepticle that you can drag and drop items to search for into it??

            btw, thanks I'll give that one a try, but I guess i'm looking for something to simplify the page so there would not be so many dropdowns

              What you are describing does not exist in ordinary HTML. You would need to
              use some custom javascript, and I have not seen any such scripting posted or
              even mentioned here.

                I don't think so. Sounds like you either didn't explain what you want or you
                didn't study the function of the script I pointed to.

                  Sorry, i guess I did not explain well enough.. this item really requires flash I beleive. To restate..

                  I want a person to be able to select up to 10 items out list that could possibly be 1200 items long. and then to submit to the query. But I do not want multiple drop-downs to clog upt he page. So my idea was to have a select an item, it will drop or be dragged into a "bucket" until they have either reached their 10 selections or their desired criteria. These items might have up to 10 sub-criterias.. like:

                  Car (All)
                  Car -- > Engine (All)
                  Car -- > Engine --> Bolts
                  Car -- > Engine --> Manifold
                  Car -- > Engine --> AC Unit
                  Car -- > Engine --> Wiring
                  Car -- > Engine --> Spark Plugs
                  Car -- > Tires
                  ..etc..

                  They may select a complete group Car -- > Engine
                  as one selection

                  or take parts of the engine they want
                  Car -- > Engine --> Manifold
                  Car -- > Engine --> AC Unit
                  Car -- > Engine --> Wiring

                  as three of their criteria

                  hope this help in the understanding..

                  I have seen flash shopping carts done this way for items added to the cart, but figured maybe it could be done for a search instead..

                    maybe you would give to user such combinations dropdown list?( which
                    sort your data with select statement you specify behind scenes)
                    Because you're not "all with all" combination - so there is not so much
                    "dust on the field"?
                    just an idea...
