opening a .jpg but comes up .bmp

Every .jpg I open in Fireworks opens as a .bmp? I need it to remain a .jpg so I can fill it with a pattern. Is there something I can do to get a .jpg to open as a .jpg? Maybe my Fireworks software got corrupt? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

.jpg is not an editable format. It would need to be a Fireworks .png for
          that.

            Whoa...

            Read that too fast.

Thought you meant something totally different.

            Ignore me, please. :)

A JPEG is a bitmap. That's why FW is calling it that. That doesn't mean
that the image is being changed to BMP format. When you save it, it will
save as a JPEG unless you manually change the format.
